Dr Justin Hayward MBA MMath, Director,

Introduction

Justin is the founder director of CIR. He specialises in delivering business intelligence, assembling high-level project business strategy teams, building value networks and structuring conferences and their focus marketing. He is a theoretical physicist by training, taking advanced degrees MMath, and PhD from Cambridge University. He was the PhD student of Professor Stephen Hawking beginning in 1991. After a 6-month postdoc in Paris, he was with Deutsche Bank London from 1996-2000 as a relative value analyst, and took an MBA from Cambridge Judge Business School in 2000/1.

Gavin Jones

Chairman’s Introduction

Gavin was until recently Chairman of SmartGrid GB, and has been a VP at IBM. He is an experienced chairman for energy events. Gavin Jones is responsible for growing the commercial business of ElectraLink in support of the UK Energy industry. Gavin is involved in the UK Smart Energy arena at both customer and policy level, speaking, writing papers and meeting with policy makers across Europe. In the UK he is a member of the DECC and Ofgem’s Smart Grid Forum which is shaping the future UK policy in this area. He has been influential in setting up Smart Grid Great Britain and was its first chair. Gavin also chairs Intellect’s (the UK technology industry association) Utilities and Smart Metering and Smart Grids Working Groups. Prior to moving to ElectraLink, Gavin was IBM’s Future Energy Leader for UK, Ireland and Nordics and had specific responsibility for leading the team selling Smart Grid solutions in the geography.

Managing Energy Better - The landscape for smart grid

Steve is a driven leader with a career in telecommunications including Nortel and BT, before joining Landis & Gyr, an energy management player with over £1bn in sales, as CEO in the UK & Ireland in 2009. He is a leader in smart grids industry fora and an experienced conference speaker and considers that a crucial area is to bring together a number of disparate business strands towards a global standard for metering energy, a grounding to move forward with smart applications.

Synopsis: This talk is given in part by a Californian energy supplier, a customer of Space-time Insight who are supporting the conference. There are issues of risk and location of problems with a connected grid. This talk covers experiences of how they might be mitigated through a valuable software control system.

John Di Stasio has been with SMUD for 32 years and is in the process of retiring from the company now in April 2014. He led and managed all aspects of the $1.4 billion California electric utility; sixth largest consumer-owned utility in the United States with 600,000 meters, 1.4 million population and 2,100 employees. John is active in the industry as a recognized leader serving as the President of the California Municipal Utility Association (CMUA), Northwest Public Power Association (NWPPA), Vice-Chair of the Large Public Power Council (LPPC), Executive Board Member of the American Public Power Association (APPA), Technical Review Panel Member of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Industry Representative, one of twenty four, at the National Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Gubernatorial Appointee the California State Workforce Investment Board. John also owns a vineyard in California.

Martin Dunlea is the Global Industries lead in the Utilities Industry Business Unit Division of Oracle, with responsibility for formulating and leading strategic, technical and functional sales activity and enhancing the reputation of Oracle’s utility solutions and products across all functional areas. Martin has more than 20 years international business experience in IT and the utility industry. Prior to joining Oracle, Martin worked as a CIO in the Utilities industry. In addition he worked as a utility industry consultant with a global practice group. He has a primary degree in Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration. Martin is based in Ireland, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.

Peter started on BT-NATO-ARPANET in the 1970s. He was UK Parliament ICT Auditor, Director of an Investment Bank, Insurance, and Technology Innovation Companies. He created Intelligent Networks 20 years ago which build network systems across Europe and Japan. He has been on several boards of international companies and was CEO of OSCRE global standard body for Real Estate and its spin off OSSSE on sustainability.

Synopsis of interests: Smart Grids and Smart Systems is the opportunity to bring together silos of traditional areas of business. The biggest value is to identify holistic solutions to reduce CAPEX and OPEX and create a framework for further investment. The biggest obstacle is to convert, teach or remove the silo thinking of traditional approaches. The Internet (and now IoT) interoperability experience combined with agreed datasets shows why ICT skills are essential for Smart Grids.

Low Carbon London: the world’s top smart grid

Michael is programme director of a project to build a smart grid for London, which has been described as the best and most sophisticated smart grid in the world, and which was inspired by his colleague Dave Openshaw. Michael is charged with describing in a short talk, the key elements of this project and how it is progressing. Michael has a background as energy manager for the London Olympics in 2012, is skilled in construction and commercial management and power systems. He has a degree in engineering from Liverpool University

Rich Hampshire is CGI UK's lead for Smart Utilities and for global smart initiatives. Rich has over 20 years' experience in the utilities sector, gained from a variety of leadership roles within a number of major utility companies covering areas including energy retail, energy services, energy markets, policy and regulation, smart meter strategy as well as providing technical advisory services to a number of European regulators. Rich is a regular speaker at utility events and the author of numerous white papers and articles on smart meters and grids, security and privacy and the effect that market structure has realising a smart vision. He is active in the leadership of a number of industry associations.

Phil is responsible for product marketing and strategic alliances at Arkessa and is driven by the desire to connect customers to products that delight. In his career, Phil has contributed to the success of a wide range of products, most recently at Mentor Graphics as Director for Product Marketing, and at Octymo, a Cambridge start-up he co-founded. Phil brings extensive global experience including living in Asia where, for TTPCom and Motorola, he built and led a pan-Asian division to service multi-million dollar contracts.

Enabling localised energy systems through smart storage in homes

Installing small scale energy storage in a group of local homes in a community could be a mechanism for managing power in a community, enabling increased local use of renewable energy sources, and grid level energy services based on aggregate action. Chris will talk about how the Maslow – www.meetmaslow.com – management platform will deploy this in our DECC contracted demonstration in 300 homes.

Chris heads up Moixa’s Engineering and Design Operations, and brings over 15 years experience in Product Design and Commercialization. He has previously worked with Michael Hopkins, Foster and Partners, on large scale complex architectural projects

Biography: Andy Stanford-Clark FBCS, CITP is a British information technology research engineer, specialising in telemetry and publish/subscribe messaging. He leads a research team at IBM, and is a Member of the IBM Academy of Technology, and IBM Master Inventor. He is also a visiting professor at Newcastle University, and a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Peer Review College.

Andy holds a BSc in Computing Studies and Mathematics from the University of East Anglia. Stanford-Clark also holds a Ph.D. in Parallel Computing: Parallel Paradigms and their Implementation from the University of East Anglia which he achieved in 1991. In 2006, Stanford-Clark became a Fellow of the British Computer Society and Chartered IT Professional. In 1999, Stanford-Clark collaborated with Arlen Nipper to author the first version of the MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol.[4] MQTT is a specialised protocol enabling telemetry or lightweight sensor and mobile systems

An expert in energy, Ian was involved in change and project management in a career that includes stretches at Meggitt in defence projects, QinetiQ, KBC consulting, after a Cambridge education, and before joining DECC to lead innovation delivery.
